Adolescence a period of risky behavior

The troublesome adolescents’ year have been documented topic of societal concern for centuries. Plato characterised the adolescents of his era as argumentative and easily excitable, while Aristotle found the impulsive, prone to excess and exaggeration, and lacking self-restraint. For centuries, the decade of adolescence –from puberty to early adulthood-has been viewed risky and problematic.
The behaviour of contemporary youth is consistent, if not more severe, than that reported in centuries past. Dryfoos (1990) present a comprehensive profile of adolescent problem in the areas of risky sexual behaviour, delinquency, drug use, and academic failure Other experts would add emotional problems as a fifth category, including such problems as depression, suicide, anxiety. and eating disorders1.
