Institute of Psychiatry. Child and Adolescent
http://www.iop.kcl.ac.uk/international/?theme_id=6
The great majority of the world’s children and adolescents live in low and middle-income countries; in some of these countries, half of the population is aged under 18. High-quality epidemiological studies conducted in developing and restructuring countries show that rates of mental health problems among children and adolescents are at least as high as in the West. Yet it seems to be true in every country, rich or poor, that mental health spending per head is lower for children and adolescents than for adults. This is not only unfair but unwise, since tomorrow’s world is in the hands of today’s children. Untreated child mental health problems leave a terrible legacy for the future of criminality, substance abuse, parenting breakdown and mental illness in adult life. With such a pressing need to develop services, isn’t research an unnecessary luxury that wastes time and diverts money from service provision? Definitely not. Relevant research helps obtain funding for services, and ensures that the money used on services is well spent.

The Division of Intramural Research Programs (DIRP) at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)
http://intramural.nimh.nih.gov/
The Division of Intramural Research Programs (DIRP) at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) is the internal research division of the NIMH. NIMH DIRP scientists conduct research ranging from studies into mechanisms of normal brain function, conducted at the behavioral, systems, cellular, and molecular levels, to clinical investigations into the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental illness. Major disease entities studied throughout the lifespan include mood disorders and anxiety, schizophrenia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders. Because of it’s outstanding resources, unique funding mechanisms, and location in the nation’s capitol, the DIRP is viewed as a national resource, providing unique opportunities in mental health research and research training.
